Average review score:

I learned that Benjamin Franklin invented and created things
Benjamin Franklin was a very interesting man. He invented the first public library, the franklin stove, bifocals, discovered that electricity and lightning came from the same force, and founded the first college. He had the biggest funeral in Philadelphia.

Masada and the World of the New Testament (Byu Studies Monographs)
Published in Paperback by Brigham Young University Press (June, 1997)
Authors: John Franklin Hall and John W. Welch
Average review score:

A Staple and a Standard
This book is an absolute standard within the circles of the study of Early Christianity, Judaism, Roman Law and Relgion; or all of the above.

The artifacts excavated from the ruins of the Masada yield fascinating insights into the world of the New Testament and the times when King Herod, Pilate, Jesus, Peter, and Paul lived. This book invites you to visit Herod's palaces, walk the robber-infested road taken by the good Samaritan, and see lamps that may have been like those carried by the ten virgins and sandals that made footprints on the shores of Galilee or the deserts of Judea.

Every item from Masada suggests something about the setting in which Christianity arose. These essays better help us understand the people, politics, and material culture of the world of the New Testament.

Miss Ella
Published in Hardcover by Vantage Press (December, 1994)
Author: Terry Franklin Culpepper
Average review score:

A compelling and poignant story of one woman's struggle.
Once I started "Miss Ella", I could not put it down. Culpepper transports his readers back to a different place and time--the early 20th century South, as seen through the struggles and triumphs of his own grandmother, a widowed black mother of 14 (yes, 14!) kids. The book runs the gamut of emotions, from funny to tragic, and is ultimately an uplifting tale of survival in the face of adversity. I think that many readers will connect with this book because the story of "Miss Ella" is really a story that could, and probably does mirror their own family history in some way. Though slimmer in scope and length, "Miss Ella" seems to be a personal "Roots"-like tale for its author--and therefore for readers too. A must read.

Monocacy: The Battle That Saved Washington
Published in Hardcover by White Mane Publishing Co. (September, 1997)
Author: Benjamin Franklin Cooling
Average review score:

At last a long look at a decisive battle.
Mr. Cooling's book presents a chronological evaluation of the events that preceeded and occurred after the Battle of Monocacy. Starting with why Lee ordered the last gasp invasion of the north, to the modern efforts to preserve the battlefield. All aspects of these events are presented but not evaluated. For example, why didn't Washington believe the people of the area when they reported that Jubal Early was in Maryland? Mr. Cooling also presents a wonderful driving tour for people who want to see and expirennce the places of the Battle of Monocacy. The appendicies go into great detail about the Ohio National Guard which fought at Monocacy, and the issues all the govenor's of the various Union states had to face when called to defend Washington. Perhaps if Jubal Early had not stalled outside of Washington, Monocacy would be celebrated as one of the greatest Confederate victories of the war.

The Moon and Other Failures
Published in Paperback by Michigan State Univ Pr (July, 1999)
Author: F. D. Reeve
Average review score:

A hauntingly beautiful collection of memorable verse.
The Moon And Other Failures is a hauntingly beautiful collection of poems fully documenting the impressive artistic talent and astonishing literary range of F.D. Reeve. Lake Champlain: The rocks rise from the water: the wind, from the West./Old fables constellate the sky./The woods are full of spiders. Abenaki ghosts/in bark canoes glide among the pines./On the granite cliff we sleep in each other's arms/under the cast of a mythic spell/by long, sweet summer love made soft and brown,/waiting for the great lake god himself/to deliver the past into our native hands./We dream we are the islands and water/that sing through the trees of the happy hunting grounds/where the starry animals are slaughtered/and trapped souls shaking in the morning light/as in a web spiral off to death./Awake, we step across our long-lost lives/stone by stone, breath by breath.

My Heart 2 Heart Diary: Broccoli
Published in Hardcover by Fine Print Publishing (October, 1998)
Authors: Ninda Dumont and Linda Campbell Franklin
Average review score:

Great fun for creative pre-teen girls!
Looking for a gift for a younger girl? The Fine Print Publishing offerings are terrific. This particular book provides room to write secret thoughts, black line drawings to add color to, and a lock--to ensure a young girl's privacy. Other Fine Print publications along the same line include _Scrap & Scribbles_ for memory books; and the company's _Birthday & Address Book_, which is kind of two books in one binding, and allows the child to color the book to suit her friends' personailities. I have given this one as a gift 4 times, and it was always received with delight.
